Fibromyalgia afflicts people of all ages, from the young to the old. Although fibromyalgia is seen in men, women and children, it is more common in women between the ages of 30 to 50 years. Fibromyalgia is diagnosed by physicians or health professionals by careful examination of personal and family history with an assessment of 'tender points' in specific muscle locations throughout the body. Fibromyalgia is characterized as widespread pain in all four quadrants of the body for at least three months. Fibromyalgia diagnosis also includes a sensitivity in 11 of 18 tender points sites (see figure below). |
